Ruggable Rug Care
Ruggable rugs are a key part of Lily Pad rooms. They add softness, color, and warmth—helping children feel safe and cared for. Because they are machine washable, they also ensure each space remains fresh and hygienic.
Why it matters:
Clean rugs communicate care and dignity.
A soft, well-kept rug can calm a child and make the space feel more like home.
Regular maintenance helps protect Lily Pad’s investment in durable furnishings.
Only the Rug Cover is machine washable; the Rug Pad should never go in the washer. Follow the washing and drying instructions carefully to avoid damage. Larger rugs should be cleaned at a laundromat, and volunteers can be reimbursed for the cost. Always ensure rugs are dry before returning them to the room.
Manufacturer links are provided below to guide you through assembly and washing steps.
-
Where to wash
Please use a laundromat for larger sizes; many home machines are too small.
Volunteers may submit laundromat receipts for full reimbursement.
Recommended washer sizes
2×3, 3×5, 5×7 rugs; standard home washer or single‑load laundromat washer.
6×9 rugs; large‑capacity laundromat washer; at least 4.5 cu. ft.
8×10 and 9×12 rugs; extra‑large or commercial washer; 5.0 cu. ft. or larger.
10×14 and 12×15 rugs; industrial or extra‑large laundromat machine.
Fit check: Make sure the rug can move freely in the drum.
-
Before you wash
Separate the Rug Cover from the Rug Pad.
Shake off debris or vacuum.
Pre‑treat stains with mild detergent.
Machine wash
Cold water; gentle cycle.
Use mild detergent without bleach.
Do not use fabric softener or bleach.
Drying
Air dry whenever possible.
If needed, tumble dry on low heat.
Do not use high heat.
-
Clean the surface. Before you begin: To maximize the performance of the non-slip Rug Pad, ensure the area you intend to lay your rug on is clean, dry, and free of any dirt or other debris.
1. Roll up the Rug Cover with the design side (or pile side for Plush or Shag) facing in. Once you've reached the end, fold the rolled-up Rug Cover in half and set it aside.
2. Lay out the Rug Pad with the grippy, rubbery side down. The care tag should be facing the ground.
3. Unfold the Rug Cover with an overhang on each side. Align the Rug Cover and the Rug Pad corners, leaving an even overhang (about one to two inches) on each side. Then, unfold the Rug Cover and align the adjacent corner. Do not tuck the Rug Pad into the corners of the Rug Cover. These corners were designed to weigh the rug down and ensure the Rug Cover lays flat on your floor.
4. Unroll the Rug Cover over the rest of the Rug Pad, smoothing it down as you go.
5. To smooth out wrinkles, roll up the Rug Cover diagonally from the corner and gently unroll

Organization Standards
An organized space communicates safety, care, and dignity to every child who enters. Clutter and broken items can feel overwhelming in an already stressful moment. Volunteers play a vital role in keeping Lily Pad rooms peaceful and functional.
Why it matters:
Children need a calm, predictable environment.
Organized toys and supplies reduce stress and help kids find what they want easily.
Caseworkers and staff benefit from a space that supports, rather than hinders, their work.
Your role as a volunteer:
Keep furniture and décor in their designated places.
Sort toys and games into labeled bins and shelves.
Remove clutter and broken or incomplete items.
Ensure blankets and pillows are clean and neatly arranged.
Check that cleaning supplies are stocked but always stored out of children’s reach.
By following these standards, you help transform cold offices into a place where children feel calm and valued.
-
Place furniture as designed; keep surfaces clear.
Store toys, books, and games in labeled bins or shelves.
Remove broken items.
Remove extra clutter; store what is not needed.
Keep blankets and pillows neat and clean. Wash blankets and decorative pillow covers regularly.
-
Sort items into the correct bins.
Legos with Legos; Magnatiles with Magnatiles; like with like.
Do not mix different types of toys. This helps children find what they need.
If a bin is overflowing, discard broken or unnecessary items.
-
Check all DVDs are in the correct cases.
Discard empty cases if the disc is missing and cannot be found.
Place Nintendo Switch games in their cases and account for them.
Discard puzzles or games that are missing essential pieces.
-
Keep cleaning supplies available and stored out of children’s reach.
Report low or missing supplies.
Thank you!
Your time and care make a lasting difference. Every rug washed, every toy sorted, every device checked helps create a calm, welcoming space for children on one of their hardest days. We are grateful for your partnership and for the dignity you bring to every Lily Pad room.
