Lily Pad #29: April 2025
Lee County DSS Office
Lee County, SC
Lee County is in the PeeDee Region of South Carolina. It is about 40 minutes northwest of Florence, SC. The Department of Social Services Office building is located in the city of Bishopville, SC.
After completing the Lily Pad in Darlington County in the morning, we headed over to Lee County that afternoon to begin putting the room together. Mark Schowalter from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Florence, SC, who was one of the volunteers for the Florence County Lily Pad installation had already gotten the room painted, unboxed every item and assembled the furniture. He and his team of friends and neighbors were instrumental in getting this room completed.
We were able to convert a small nook of the office into a visitation room in addition to the Lily Pad room. The office had new floors installed in this room prior to our arrival, so we got to work finishing installing the baseboards, moving the furniture in, and hanging the TV and other electronics. After hanging the wall decor and filling the shelves with toys, books and sensory support items, we finished off the room the next morning with a chalkboard activity wall and did all of the finishing touches with lamps and plants. Last but not least, we completed the new visitation room. Lee County DSS now has a soft place for kids to land!

Before

After! A cheerful, yet calm place to land.

With careful planning, we were able to add more seating with a glider that reclines.

Whenever possible, we include an activity wall to enjoy and allow kids to be kids.

The room has an attached bathroom we were able to spruce up. The room got new flooring prior to our arrival.

What kid doesn't love to relax watching a favorite movie or playing a favorite video game? We also provide dolls and toys, including sensory support toys.

Books and coloring books are a huge hit!

We love to include Scripture in the room in some capacity.

We pray this space can calm anxious hearts and minds.

We provide all of the bed linens and store them in or near the Lily Pad room. This shelf in the bathroom was perfect.

(Before) This is the nook that was available to create a new visitation area.

(After) Now kids don't have to be displaced from the Lily Pad room when visitation appointments occur.

They have a comfortable space to meet with their family members.

These toys provide an opportunity to for family members to connect, and we are honored to be part of that.
