This Lily Pad marks a major milestone for our organization as the very first Lily Pad space created inside a law enforcement agency. For the last four years, Lily Pad spaces have served children and families inside Department of Social Services offices across South Carolina. This new chapter expands that same mission of dignity, compassion, and trauma-informed care into victim services and law enforcement settings.
This space was intentionally designed to serve victims of violence, abuse, and trauma by creating an environment that feels calmer, more comforting, and more human during difficult conversations and investigations.
This partnership began when Sergeant Sarah Arms of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit reached out after having to take a victim into an interrogation room and realizing she never wanted someone experiencing trauma to have to walk through that kind of environment again if there could be a better option.
Her desire to create a softer, safer, and more dignified space for victims became the catalyst for this project and helped confirm for Lily Pad that expanding into law enforcement was the next step in the mission.
What makes this room especially meaningful to us is that it also brought us back to our roots.
In the early days of Lily Pad, before larger partnerships and funding opportunities existed, Ben and Jennifer Tice personally painted walls, laid flooring, and built spaces themselves alongside volunteers and community members.
As Lily Pad stepped into this first law enforcement partnership, Ben and Jennifer once again found themselves side by side laying floors and painting walls together — a reminder that while the mission continues growing, the heart behind it remains the same.
This room represents more than just a new location for Lily Pad. It represents a community coming together to ensure victims are met with dignity, compassion, and care during some of the hardest moments of their lives.
We are incredibly grateful to Doug Hunt and Resproland for generously funding this project and helping make this space possible for the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office and the community they serve.
We believe no child or victim should spend their hardest day in a cold office.
